What are the car insurance requirements in New Jersey?

Like many other states, New Jersey requires drivers to carry minimum level of auto insurance coverage. New Jersey drivers must have:

Basic Policy

  • Property damage liability (PDL): $5,000 per accident
  • Personal injury protection (PIP): $15,000 per person, per accident with up to $250,00 for severe injuries.

The basic policy is ideal for younger drivers and individuals with few financial responsibilities. While bodily injury liability (BDL) is not a required minimum by New Jersey, many New Jersey drivers opt for the standard policy that does include bodily injury liability. The standard insurance policy in NJ includes:

Standard Policy

  • Bodily injury liability (BDL): $15,00 per person, per accident with $30,00 if multiple people are injured.
  • Property damage liability (PDL): $5,000 per accident
  • Personal injury protection (PIP): $15,000 per person, per accident with up to $250,00 for severe injuries.

The Standard Policy includes choosing a Right to Sue option should the policy holder be injured in an accident. This right is outside of the PIP coverage for medical expenses or loss of income and is specifically for pain and suffering. There are two options: Limited Right to Sue and Unlimited Right to Sue. As the Unlimited Right to Sue comes with broader rights to sue, the premiums for this option are higher.
